Juhana Marttinen Architects / Projects / Penttilänranta bridge / Detail
A special system for the balustrade detailing was developed. Both external and internal lights have been incorporated into the glulam beams which are the main load-bearing elements of the bridge. The system has two purposes: To hide the lighting installations and electrical installations' cabling, and to protect the glulam beams from rain. The top of the beam is a detachable element, which can be removed by accessing screws hidden behind the light cover. The element is made of cross-laminated, epoxy treated wood, which makes it weatherproof. The top of the element reaches over the main beam forming "eaves" which direct rain water away from the main element. The elements can be removed for access to lights and cabling. They can also be replaced while the main beam remains in place. At the base of the beam there is a guide for snow ploughs and maintenance vehicles, with recessed stainless steel inserts. Rain water is led to the river from the gutter between the beam and the deck. |
